After a few phone interviews, the lucky “slapper” I hired was a girl named Kara.
Yeah, I know it sounds crazy… but what happened next was even crazier… because it worked.
I met Kara at a local coffee shop in my neighborhood the next day around 9 a.m.
We talked for a few minutes… got some coffee… and then I gave her the basic instructions. I asked her to monitor me for the next few hours, and make sure I was staying on task.
I gave Kara a small list of the things I needed to get done for the day and told her if I did anything (other than what was on the list) that she had “the okay” to smack me in the face.
Yup – a few times, she definitely had to slap me. But then something happened. I actually started to get my work done (quality work) and wasn’t “finding” myself procrastinating my day away.
Knowing there would be a painful slap if I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing, it not only changed my behavior…. but… after checking my stats on the Rescue Time app, it actually quadrupled my productivity.
Realizing how well this worked, this experiment sparked a light bulb to go off in my head.
